Long Island Plumbers Offer Simple Tips and Tricks
Long Island Plumbers have offered some tips to homeowners to help them with problems they may encounter. The number one thing is to know your piping. There are so many types of pipes in a home that knowing what you should have and what you are working with is the first order of business.
Copper piping is used for all water lines. A push has been made by some for the flex lines used in Europe but good old copper still rules the homes in the USA. Although expensive, it is a standard and easy to use. PVC is used for all waste and vent lines. Black pipe is usually used for gas applications.
Copper pipes are known to devlop leaks either where there are connection fittings or even in midline. Any leak shoudl be done by a professional a homeowner should do something to stop the leak. Either shut off the water source before the leak. There is usually a handle to turn 90 degrees to shut off the supply of water. You could even take the next step and use some putty to stop the leak temporarily but this is not a permanent fix and should be looked at by a licensed Long Island plumber.
If you do attempt something like soldering a connection, the biggest issue why this fails is not having an absolutely clean area where you are soldering. Any grease or debris will cause a problem so make sure both ends of pipe/connectors are clean and shiny.
PVC sometimes develops cracks and again these should be looked at by a plumber.
